Over the course of the year, we will work on the following units:
- Writing - students will practice the 6+1 writing traits (ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice, conventions, and presentation).
- Reform - students will read essays by and about key Enlightenment thinkers, and respond to these in discussion and writing. They will also read excerpts from The Lowell Offering: Writings by New England Mill Women (1840-1945). They will respond to these in discussion, and written summary/analysis.
- Imperialism - students will read and analyze the effect of Imperialism/Colonization on the Igbo tribe as demonstrated in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart.
- Revolution - students will research an aspect of the Russian Revolution, and compare those elements to the events in Animal Farm.
- Class Structure - students will read watch and analyze Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and read Mary Reilly. They will use these to analyze class structure in Victorian England, and explore elements of Gothic Literature.
