Close Reading
Close Reading is careful reading and re-reading of text. It demands a focus on the traditional elements of literature, as well as an awareness on what we, as people, bring to the text.
By systematically exploring a text, we can analyse the impact of words on meaning, both intentional and perceived. The Common Core Standards demand a practice of close reading, although it is certainly not a new practice.
We will be reading:
"The Most Dangerous Game"
"The Fall of the House of Usher"
"Beware of the Dog"
"The Wife's Story"
"The Lady or The Tiger?"
"Mending Wall"
"On the Subway"
and other short stories and poems.
